ABOUT IVC FILTER

An IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) Filter is a small cone-shaped, cage-like device implanted into the vein(s) of patients to catch blood clots and prevent them from traveling through the vena cava to the lungs and heart. The device first came out in 1979 and has been increasingly used over time. They are usually implanted in patients who are at risk of developing a pulmonary embolism or blood clot(s), and who cannot use blood thinners or in whom blood thinners have proven ineffective. IVC Filters can be permanent or retrievable. Retrievable filters are to be used for short-term protection, but unfortunately can cause serious complications, long-term health problems, and even death.
