ABOUT IVC FILTER

An IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) Filter is a small cone-shaped, cage-like device implanted into the vein(s) of patients to catch blood clots and prevent them from traveling through the vena cava to the lungs and heart. The device first came out in 1979 and has been increasingly used over time. They are usually implanted in patients who are at risk of developing a pulmonary embolism or blood clot(s), and who cannot use blood thinners or in whom blood thinners have proven ineffective. IVC Filters can be permanent or retrievable. Retrievable filters are to be used for short-term protection, but unfortunately can cause serious complications, long-term health problems, and even death. Due to inadequate warnings and instructions on the use of retrievable IVC Filters provided by manufacturers, many doctors left the filters in the vena cava for overly long-periods of time, increasing the risk that the IVC Filter may fail, and cause severe and deadly side effects. In May 2014 the FDA issued a safety update recommending the earlier removal of retrievable IVC Filters once the risk of a clot travelling to the heart and lungs has passed.

Signs & Symptoms

Heart or lung perforation or injury, wrongful death, hemorrhagic pericardial effusion or other hemorrhage, punctured vena cava, filter fracture or filter migration and cardiac tamponade (pressure on the heart due to fluid buildup) or pericardial tamponade (buildup of fluid inside the pericardial sac around the heart) are some of the serious problems that can arise from having an IVC Filter. From 2005 to 2010 more than 921 reports of IVC Filter complications were filed with the FDA, 35 percent of these reports included IVC Filter migration. If you or a love one are experiencing any issues with an IVC Filter, seek medical attention immediately.

Diagnosis

The FDA has been raising concerns about problems with retrievable IVC Filters since August 2010. Research has confirmed that series problems can arise with retrievable IVC Filters, especially those that are left in overly long or are not removed from the patient at all. IVC Filter lawsuits are being reviewed by lawyers: if you or a loved one have experienced complications with an IVC Filter, you may be eligible for compensation for your pain and suffering.
