Motorcycle Accidents Analytics
An interesting research has come forward by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), US Department of Transportation. Over the past few years, the number of biking accidents have rapidly increased.
Risk of accident
The risks of accident is 5% higher in case of motorcycles as compared to cars. When you take your motorcycle out on the road, the chances of accidents are 6% whereas if you are in your car, the chances are only 1%.
13% of road accidents are caused by motorcycles whereas out of all the registered vehicles, only 3% are motorcycles.
Why is the risk more?
It is often asked that why there is more risk of accident on motorcycles than in cars. Even though motorcycles move slower on roads than cars, they are more vulnerable to other factors. Some of these factors include:
Poor weather such as storm, rain, or snow
Road hazards such as flying objects or hanging wires
Poor road conditions like dug holes and ruptured roads
Also, a motorcylist not enclosed on four sides as that of a car driver. Due to these factors, when a motorcyclist gets into accident, they are going to get more severe injuries.
25% of motorbike accidents happen when a motorcyclist collides hits road fixtures such as telephone pole or ends of the bridge. 50% of motorcycle accidents take place when a motorcycle collides into other vehicle due to these above-mentioned road factors.
According to NHTSA, the number of motorcycle accidents increased to 70% between 2000 and 2007. The risk of injuries is 5 times more in a motorcycle accident than a car accident. Moreover, the risk of dying is increased by 25 times.
Motorcycle accidents in older age group
Per our research, motorcycle accidents are more common in older age group than younger one. Over the age of 40, the risks of accidents increase while you are driving a vehicle. And when you are riding a motorcycle, the risk doubles.
People in the older age were found to be involved in 54% of fatal motorcycling accidents. When it comes to young motorcyclists, the percentage of accidents has dropped from 24% to 19% is the last decade. However, the risk still lingers!
